From Martial Arts to Medicine—A Journey Rooted in Recovery
Joseph Shkreli, L.Ac, is a New York State–licensed acupuncturist with a Master of Science in Acupuncture from the Pacific College of Health and Science (Class of 2024). His commitment to orthopedic and sports-injury recovery grew out of years spent in the boxing ring, on the jiu-jitsu mat, and—most pivotally—training Muay Thai in Thailand.
While in Thailand and two weeks into 2020, a kick to a heavy bag resulted in a hip injury that stalled his training. An acupuncturist visiting from NYC offered treatment; within 24 hours, Joseph returned to full movement, and after five consecutive sessions, his recovery was complete. The experience sparked a mission: deliver the same drug-free relief to others living with pain.
He earned his MSAc from Pacific College’s New York campus and completed approximately 3,307 total hours of training, including 990 hours of clinical practice and 2,317 hours of didactic instruction. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, and Joseph deepened his focus on orthopedic care through clinical rotations at the college’s on-campus clinic, where he treated over 250 patients. During his schooling, Joseph interned for three years with Dr. Boaku Liu, a practitioner with over 30 years of experience in scar tissue acupuncture, gaining valuable skills in acupuncture techniques and patient care.
He also gained experience serving under-resourced communities through externships at fast-paced clinics such as OnPointNYC in Harlem. These opportunities allowed him to apply acupuncture techniques in integrative, community-focused settings while advancing his expertise in both orthopedic and holistic care.
